The Existential Dispatch, Issue No. 6
This week has the texture of midsummer: long light outside, and inside our systems the familiar compression of time — triage, throughput, schedules, targets. Thinker of the issue: Hannah Arendt.
A Word from the Founding Director
This week has the texture of midsummer: long light outside, and inside our systems the familiar compression of time — triage, throughput, schedules, targets. Existential work often begins when we notice the mismatch between what the institution counts and what a person experiences.
In the clinic, in a ward, or in a staff room after a difficult incident, meaning can feel like a luxury word. But meaning is also a safety issue: it is what keeps care from becoming only endurance. My invitation this week is simple: pick one moment you would normally rush past — a hard conversation, a quiet check-in, an apology, a boundary — and treat it as clinically relevant data. The existential is often what remains after the checklist is complete.
Existential Thinker of the Issue
Hannah Arendt (1906–1975)
Quote (The Human Condition; excerpted): “In this respect, forgiveness is the exact opposite of vengeance… permitting the chain reaction contained in every action to take its unhindered course.” themarginalian.org
Why it matters in clinical/existential practice: Arendt’s distinction is not sentimental — it is structural. In healthcare, moral injury and burnout often follow a similar chain reaction: one harmful event leads to another, and soon the whole unit is living inside the echo.
Forgiveness here is not excusing; it is interrupting inevitability. It can look like a debrief that restores agency, a policy change that prevents repetition, or a repair conversation that returns someone to the community.

A conceptual prompt this week: Arendt’s pairing of forgiveness and promises (as social faculties that restore continuity) lands differently in 2026 as more care pathways experiment with mediated conversation and structured life-review.
To Close: An Existential Joke
I tried to live in the present. The present asked for a follow-up appointment.
