A Word from the Founding Director

Some accounts of suffering narrow attention to symptoms and individual coping; this issue asks what becomes visible when we attend to relationships, culture, and structures. From compassion as a feasible intervention in cancer care to WHO’s naming of structural distress, these pieces remind us that existential care does not explain suffering away. It asks what forms of agency, belonging, and accompaniment remain possible.

Existential Thinker of the Issue

Epicurus

“Of all the means which are procured by wisdom to ensure happiness throughout the whole of life, by far the most important is the acquisition of friends.” — Epicurus, Principal Doctrines, no. 27, trans. Robert Drew Hicks classics.mit.edu

Clinically, this is not a prescription to treat friendship as another intervention to measure. Serious illness can unsettle the relationships through which a person feels known and at home; asking who can accompany someone, and what belonging means to them, makes connection part of care rather than a pleasant extra.

In Academia

Compassion With You (COMwithU) for existential distress in cancer. A September 2026 feasibility study tested five individual compassion-based sessions, offered in person or by video, with adults living with cancer. The authors report high acceptability and preliminary improvements in outcomes including spiritual well-being and demoralization; as a single-arm feasibility study, it is promising early evidence, not proof of efficacy. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

In Film, Literature and Culture

The Impossible Bet. Genentech’s new 50th-anniversary documentary pairs the company’s biotechnology history with patient stories, including people affected by cancer. Its corporate origin is part of the story: the film invites reflection on who narrates medical innovation, and how individual lives are represented when a company tells its own history. mmm-online.com

In Healthcare (Global)

WHO looks beyond the individual in Pakistan. A feature published October 7 frames distress as structural as well as personal. It is a useful reminder for clinical practice and health systems alike: suffering is shaped by material conditions and social relations, not only by what an individual can be taught to cope with. who.int

Funding and Grant Opportunities

Brain Canada’s 2026 Knowledge Mobilization Grants: Mental Health of Older Persons. The University of Calgary funding database lists an October 27, 2026 full-application deadline and a project budget of CAD 100,000, with applicants required to secure 25% from eligible sponsors. The database does not state the complete eligibility rules, so check the official call and matching-fund requirements before developing an application. research.ucalgary.ca

Canadian Race Relations Foundation — National Anti-Racism Fund, Projects Grants 2026–2027. The same database lists awards of CAD 25,000–125,000 for one year and a December 4, 2026 deadline. Community-partnered work on equity in healthcare may merit a fit check; confirm the fund’s current priorities and applicant eligibility in the official call. research.ucalgary.ca

Conferences and Events

The Center to Advance Palliative Care lists “From Distress to Action: Addressing Moral Distress in Palliative Care” on October 15 at 5 p.m. ET (continuing education offered), and “Well-Being Debriefing to Address the Challenges of Our Work” on October 20 at 1:30 p.m. ET, free and open to all. Both place caregiver well-being within the conditions of care, not outside them. capc.org

Startup and Innovation Watch

Solera Health’s Cancer Care Network. Announced October 8, the network connects members to digital screening, supportive care, and treatment navigation, including Iris by OncoHealth and Fuze Health. Navigation may make services easier to find; its existential promise will depend on whether people can access support that listens to their priorities, not simply route them through a platform. globenewswire.com

To Close: An Existential Joke

Why did the existentialist bring a map to the clinic? Not to find the meaning of life—just to locate the parking garage.
