The Existential Dispatch, Issue No. 39

Clinical knowledge becomes humane when it can remain answerable to the person who must live with its consequences. Thinker of the issue: Blaise Pascal.

A Word from the Founding Director

Clinical knowledge becomes humane when it can remain answerable to the person who must live with its consequences. This issue follows that responsibility through anxiety in cancer care, the stories we tell about illness, humanitarian oncology, and the promises—and limits—of artificial intelligence. The existential question is not whether uncertainty can be removed, but whether we can meet it without reducing the person who bears it.

Existential Thinker of the Issue

Blaise Pascal

“The heart has its reasons, which reason does not know.” — Blaise Pascal, Pensées: gutenberg.org

Pascal’s “heart” is not a licence for anti-intellectualism; it names forms of perception that formal proof cannot exhaust. Clinically, the line asks us to notice what a patient knows through fear, attachment, memory, and value—knowledge that may not arrive as a neat proposition, but can determine whether a plan is experienced as care.

In Academia

Onco-anxiology as a testable proposal. A September 18 perspective in Frontiers in Psychology proposes an anxiety-focused, longitudinal framework within psycho-oncology, organised around cancer-specific mechanisms and assessment across the care trajectory. Its status is appropriately provisional: a concept to test, not a new specialty to assume. frontiersin.org

Whole-person survivorship care. The MATCH study, involving more than 500 cancer survivors, found that mindfulness-based cancer recovery and tai chi/qigong improved pain interference and fatigue; tai chi/qigong also improved sleep disturbance. The results make room for embodied practices without pretending that symptom intensity tells the whole story. medicalxpress.com

In Film, Literature and Culture

Health storytelling as a meeting place. CINEHEALTH’s fourth annual international film and video festival brought patients, healthcare professionals, filmmakers, and advocates together through film, episodic work, social media, and podcasts; its 2026 awards were presented in Philadelphia on September 15. Illness is never only an event in the body—it is also a question of interpretation, voice, and relation. cine-health.com

In Healthcare (Global)

Cancer care in humanitarian settings. Médecins Sans Frontières reports that about 80% of breast- and cervical-cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, while describing cancer programmes in Mali and Malawi that combine screening, treatment, palliative care, psychological support, and community engagement. Medicines and protocols matter, but continuity and recognition matter too. prezly.msf.org.uk

Funding and Grant Opportunities

AACR-AstraZeneca Fellowship for Physician-Scientists for Digital Pathology and AI Training. The two-year award is listed at $200,000 USD, with an application deadline of September 29, 2026 and a December 1, 2026 start date. AACR’s live page also lists a Cancer Prevention Research Fellowship deadline of September 22, 2026, so check eligibility and portal status carefully. aacr.org

Planning beyond September. The same AACR listing gives a November 12, 2026 letter-of-intent deadline for the QuadW Foundation Sarcoma Research Fellowship and a November 18, 2026 deadline for the Bosarge Family Foundation–Waun Ki Hong Scholar Award. aacr.org

Conferences and Events

Intelligent Oncology — The Potential of AI to Control Cancer. The Freiburg meeting runs September 24–25, 2026, with sessions on digital pathology, radiology, genomics, precision medicine, clinical translation, and ethical and regulatory challenges; a dedicated Startup Area is part of the programme. intelligent-oncology.org

International Congress on Palliative Care. The 50th-anniversary MIPCC runs October 6–9, 2026 in Montréal, expecting 1,500 delegates. Its invitation—“Come for the research. Stay for the reflections.”—is a useful description of why palliative scholarship needs both evidence and existential attention. mipcc2026.ca

Startup and Innovation Watch

From model to clinical ecology. Intelligent Oncology’s Startup Area invites companies working in oncology, digital health, AI, diagnostics, and clinical decision support to meet clinicians and researchers in Freiburg. The question for innovation is not simply whether a system predicts well, but whether its provenance, limits, and unrepresented patients remain visible. intelligent-oncology.org

To Close: An Existential Joke

Why did Pascal decline the AI triage tool? It had excellent reasons—but none of them knew what the patient’s heart was trying to say.
