The Existential Dispatch, Issue No. 36
The question of access is also a question of recognition: who is allowed to appear in care as a whole person, with a history, a body, a community, and a future that cannot be reduced to a risk score? Thinker of the issue: Otto Rank.
A Word from the Founding Director
The question of access is also a question of recognition: who is allowed to appear in care as a whole person, with a history, a body, a community, and a future that cannot be reduced to a risk score? This issue moves from existential psychotherapy and psychosocial oncology to cancer systems, palliative care, and clinical AI. Across each domain, the task is similar: to make room for lived experience without losing rigour.
Existential Thinker of the Issue
Otto Rank
“Man is born beyond psychology and he dies beyond it but he can live beyond it only through vital experience of his own—in religious terms, through revelation, conversion or rebirth.” — Otto Rank, Beyond Psychology academic.oup.com
Rank’s provocation is clinically useful because it resists the fantasy that a person can be fully captured by a diagnostic vocabulary. In oncology, psychiatry, and end-of-life care, “vital experience” names the patient’s irreducible authorship: the meanings, relationships, fears, and commitments through which treatment becomes either bearable or impossible.
In Academia
Training the psychosocial oncology workforce. A July study of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society’s Virtual Academy reports 262 registrants and 147 completers across 41 states, with a 15-session asynchronous curriculum spanning psychological, relational, spiritual, social, and practical dimensions of cancer. Its access question is existential as well as logistical: how can specialist care travel to places where the specialist is absent? pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
From models to clinical ecosystems. A July review of AACR 2026 work describes oncology AI moving from isolated models toward integrated, agentic systems for data coordination, trial matching, clinical abstraction, and discovery—while emphasising bias, privacy, representativeness, governance, and human oversight. The technical advance is inseparable from the question of who remains visible in the data. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
In Film, Literature and Culture
CINEHEALTH and the work of medical storytelling. The international health and wellness film festival’s 2026 programme brought patient and clinician engagement together through film, television, and audio, with its awards celebration in Philadelphia on September 15. Such work matters because illness is never only an event in the body; it is also a story about interpretation, authority, intimacy, and the future. cine-health.com
In Healthcare (Global)
The future we choose together. The WHO’s Global status report on cancer 2026 places lived experience, palliative care, survivorship, and the human and social consequences of cancer alongside incidence, mortality, and system capacity. Its call for better capabilities, better protections, and better value is a reminder that equity is not an accessory to progress; it is the measure of whether progress has reached people. who.int
Funding and Grant Opportunities
Canadian Cancer Society / Cancer Research Society opportunities. The current Canadian Cancer Society listing gives an Investigator-Initiated Clinical Trials Program deadline of September 16, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST, and Summit Discovery Grants 2026 a deadline of September 23 at 5:00 p.m. EST. Eligibility and abstract-registration requirements apply, so check the live listing before submitting. cancer.ca
A practical note. The September 16 deadline is today; for any application still in motion, confirm institutional sign-off, registration status, and the funder’s current portal instructions before treating the date as actionable.
Conferences and Events
Existential Dimension in Counselling and Psychotherapy. The East European Association for Existential Therapy’s XIII International Conference runs through September 16 in Birštonas, Lithuania, with sessions on trauma, dissociation, philosophical practice, therapeutic relationships, supervision, and humour in therapy. English and Russian are the working languages, with translation as needed. existentialtherapy.eu
Palliative care in Manitoba. The Annual Provincial Palliative Care Conference takes place September 17–18 in Winnipeg, with sessions on equity-oriented care, spiritual care in dementia, meaningful decision-making, and existential well-being at end of life. It is a useful reminder that existential care is often built into ordinary professional education rather than kept in a separate conceptual room. palliativemanitoba.ca
Startup and Innovation Watch
The infrastructure beneath the interface. The AACR review highlights systems such as Synapse, DrBioRight, GP CoPilot, and Isabl AI Agent, which make large-scale cancer data more searchable, reproducible, and usable across institutions. The innovation test is not whether a system can produce an answer, but whether clinicians and patients can see its provenance, limits, and unrepresented lives. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
To Close: An Existential Joke
Why did Otto Rank refuse to join the clinical algorithm? It promised to explain his life—but only after he accepted the terms and conditions.
