The Existential Dispatch, Issue No. 11
A Monday theme worth carrying into the week: our finitude is not only a limit but a source of clarity. Thinker of the issue: Martin Heidegger.
A Word from the Founding Director
Good morning. A Monday theme worth carrying into the week: our finitude is not only a limit but a source of clarity. What we choose to attend to — which conversation, which patient, which unfinished piece of work — is shaped by the quiet knowledge that our time is not infinite. This week's dispatch gathers work that takes that seriously, from meaning-making at the end of life to the tools we're building to accompany people through it.
Existential Thinker of the Issue
Martin Heidegger (1889–1976)
German philosopher; author of Being and Time; thinker of Dasein and being-toward-death.
"If I take death into my life, acknowledge it, and face it squarely, I will free myself from the anxiety of death and the pettiness of life — and only then will I be free to become myself."
Heidegger's claim is that authentic existence begins when we stop fleeing our own finitude. His "being-toward-death" is not morbid; it is the condition under which a life can become genuinely one's own rather than an anonymous drifting. For clinicians in serious illness and end-of-life care, this reframes the work: helping patients face finitude squarely is not stripping away hope but opening the possibility of an authentic, self-authored final chapter.
