The Existential Dispatch, Issue No. 1

Welcome to the inaugural issue of The Existential Dispatch. Thinker of the issue: Viktor E. Frankl.

A Word from the Founding Director

Welcome to the inaugural issue of The Existential Dispatch. Three times a week, we gather what is alive at the intersection of existential inquiry and our work — scholarship, film and letters, global healthcare, funding, and the gatherings where these conversations happen. Each issue opens with a thinker worth sitting with and closes, deliberately, with a joke — because finitude is best met with both rigor and a wry smile.

Existential Thinker of the Issue

Viktor E. Frankl (1905–1997)

Viennese psychiatrist; founder of logotherapy; author of Man's Search for Meaning.

"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."

Frankl's claim that the will to meaning is the primary human motivation emerged from survival in Nazi concentration camps, and laid the groundwork for the meaning-centered interventions now used in serious illness and end-of-life care. The existential is not abstract, but bedside.
